Housing and profits

In January, after another interview request, Olden wrote that Smith "will be traveling extensively on business over the next several months and will not have time to sit for an interview."

A 1972 graduate of the College of Business at the University of Missouri, Smith is hoping some of his real estate skills rub off on students today. He is in the process of donating $3 million over a 20-year period to finance the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate and to launch a real estate degree program. He is also a member of the colleges Strategic Development Board, which advises the dean about business trends and assists with fundraising.

Smiths portrait hangs in the atrium of the business school building along with eight others who have donated $1 million or more. Up there with the likes of the late Sam Walton and seven other businessmen, Smith is the only one not wearing a suit and tie.

'Vantage Point' leads box office

Sony's action-thriller "Vantage Point" took advantage of limp competition to open atop the domestic box office with an estimated $24 million, easily felling its nearest rival.

Fox's action fantasy "Jumper" finished second in its sophomore session with $12.7 million, as a 54 percent drop from opening grosses yielded a 10-day cume of $56.2 million. Paramount's family fantasy "The Spiderwick Chronicles" rung up $12.6 million on a modest 34 percent fall in its second outing to grab third place and produce a $43.6 million cume.

The Disney dance sequel "Step Up 2 the Streets" slipped 48 percent in its second frame to gross $9.8 million for fourth place, yielding a cume of $41.4 million. Warner Bros.' adventure yarn "Fool's Gold" fetched enough coinage from its third weekend to finish fifth with $6.3 million and a $52.4 million cume.

ON MCCAIN'S CITIZENSHIP Click here to see the video

-I think that the media needs to get a grip! I will not vote for McCain, but I do not doubt his citizenship! Susan, VA Beach

-Language in Constitution needs to be changed to fit the times. John McCain should be considered a citizen of U.S. Mary Ann, Belle Haven

-If we are going to question every one that was born at a military base, there are going to be pleanty of people that are not "natural" citizens! His parents, and grandparents are American citizens - he was born at an American controlled Panama Canal Zone location - doesn't the media have anything better to do? Bonnie, Gloucester

-McCain is and always will be a United States citizen.

Wal-Mart encourages employees to post blunt comments about products on ...

Microsoft is one of Wal-Mart's biggest suppliers. But that did not stop the Wal-Mart employee in charge of buying computers from panning Microsoft's newest operating system, Vista.

"My life has not changed dramatically" because of the new system, he wrote on his blog. "Well, for that matter, it hasn't changed at all."

His public burst of candor was not isolated. On the same blog, a video game buyer for Wal-Mart slammed a "Star Wars" film as a "debacle," even though Wal-Mart still sells the movie.

Known for its strict, by-the-books culture - accepting a cup of coffee from a supplier can be a firing offense - Wal-Mart is now encouraging employees who do the buying to speak frankly, even critically, about the products the chain carries.

An unusual new Web site by Wal-Mart, which was quietly created during the holiday shopping season, has become a forum for unvarnished rants about gadgets, raves about new video games and advice on selecting environmentally sustainable food.

Oscar Events

It was my first time seeing the film, which has been on the festival circuit since Telluride back in September. I don't think I can even begin to qualify it. I'm pretty sure it's an undeniable work of art, but beyond that, I need time to let it soak in and, most assuredly, I'll need another viewing. I didn't even mosey over to Haynes during the reception because, quite frankly, I have no idea what I would have said to him. In any case, my opinion isn't what's important. What IS important is how floored the viewers in attendance were. There was even a cryer. Yeah, a cryer. Michael Mann was in attendance, said he enjoyed the film, and spent quite a while making the rounds during the reception. Most enthusiastic, however, was Ben Foster, who could not contain his sheer glee, not only at "I'm Not There," but at what he calls a "great year for movies." He had recently come from seeing the Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men," which had him on a high to go along with the Chivas Regal he was throwing back.

Jenice Armstrong: Rocawear picks Philly writer

PHILLY-BASED novelist Daaimah S. Poole deserves a shoutout, most recently for her recognition by Rocawear, the hip-hop-clothing giant.

Poole, whose latest book is "All I Want Is Everything" (Kensington, $14.95), was selected after submitting a video on which she talks about her struggles as a teenage, single mother who landed a major publishing deal without even owning a computer. A graduate of Overbrook High, Poole used to type on the computers in Temple University's library until closing time. I got to know Poole (who was discovered by literary whiz Karen E. Quinones Miller) after editing her first book, "Yo Yo Love."

A spokeswoman for Rocawear says Poole will be featured on the Web site www.Iwillnotlose.org. In addition to Poole, Jay-Z's I Will Not Lose Campaign is spotlighting singer Ciara and Nicole Paultre-Bell, fiancee of Sean Bell, who was killed in a hail of 50 bullets on the eve of his wedding after leaving a New York strip bar.

Wisconsin Sports Spectacular

Anything can happen, but I'm not going to hold my breath the way they've been in the last 3 weeks. On a side note on this one, the Big Ten Network is allowing the UW to show the game on the scoreboard in the Kohl Center. Kudos to the Big Ten Network for doing that since it won't be on hardly anybody's tv in Madison. You'd never see the NFL Network doing that, Goodell wouldn't let it happen. The Roger Clemens story that broke about his wife taking HGH over the weekend really makes me think that Clemens is lying. If his trainer is lying, why would he bring Roger's wife into it and add another layer of lies on top of the original lie? It is extremely plausible that either Roger would want his wife to do it or his wife would want to it on her own. McNamee has nothing to gain by bringing Mrs. Clemens into this.
