Are they incinerated? Buried? William Gazdagh Belleville, Ill. --- Recalled products that are taken back to stores are returned to manufacturers, which generally destroy them, through incineration or other measures, or send them to a landfill. Depending on the nature of the recall, though, food products are sometimes reprocessed. In the past, if a recall involved a bacterial pathogen that could be destroyed by cooking at a high temperature, recalled meat was further processed until it was deemed safe, and then sometimes reused in pet food.

Proclamation splits council
He likened the move to what would happen if a conservative pushed a proclamation honoring conservative talk radio host Mike Rosen "for all he does for the taxpayers of the city." Lopez acknowledged that the proclamation hadn't been universally embraced by his colleagues and that Brown and Faatz had asked him not to push it. "I respect their opinion," Lopez said. "But there should be no controversy about the need for a living wage or access to health care or affordable housing." Council President Michael Hancock and councilwoman Carol Boigon were absent for the entire meeting. Usually proclamations are feel-good measures that draw universal support. But in December, Brown chastised Councilmen Chris Nevitt and Doug Linkhart for talking about labor strife when a proclamation was issued to National Hirschfeld, which has been in business for 100 years.

Not just another punk: Martin Atkins' can-do approach
On a snowy night in late January, a former funeral home in Bridgeport teems with life. The basement houses a small recording studio; the ground floor, where friends and family once gathered to mourn the deceased, functions as an art gallery/office space/warehouse; only the second floor, long ago converted into a two-bedroom apartment, stands empty. For the past six years this two-story building has functioned as a sort of mission control for Martin Atkins, onetime drummer for Johnny Lydon's post-Sex Pistols project Public Image Ltd., the driving force behind industrial band Pigface, artist and the founder of Invisible Records, which is entering its 20th year. The Coventry, England-born Atkins, who settled in Chicago more than a decade ago, just completed a hectic 2007.

ESPN Anchor Goes On Vulgar Anti-Jesus Rant at Celebrity Roast
In the past few decades, as political correctness has taken hold of virtually every industry, folks involved in sports and sportscasting that have made racist or sexist remarks on camera have typically been fired or forced to make public apologies. Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder's termination by CBS back in 1988 is a fine example, with the recent two-week suspension of Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman being another. Yet, given what happened on an Atlantic City dais on January 11, where a high-profile ESPN anchor went on an alcohol-induced tirade which included a vulgar reference to Jesus Christ, it appears public antitheism is not politically incorrect. After all, until this moment, you probably hadn't heard about this incident, and the person involved apparently has not been publicly admonished for her behavior by her employer.
